Daniel Archer - Fashion Photographer

Talk a little bit a bout yourself
I am a fashion photographer currently studying at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.
What tools do you use and why?
My tools of the trade include a Canon 5D mkii, a Mac Pro laptop with 2.2ghz and 4 GB RAM. I also use a Samsung XL2370 screen to edit my images. In my back pack I carry two 580ex II flashes, a 100mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8 and a 24-70 f/2.8 lens. And finally and the most important “tool” I use is creativity.

Where do you get your inspiration for your fashion pictorials?
A large chunk of my inspiration comes from music. Some favourite artists of mine include Jeff Buckley, Portishead, Massive Attack, Radio Head, Angus and Julia Stone.
The work of the master photographers, Craig Mcdean, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Hedi Silmane are also great sources of inspiration for me.
My most recent editorial was shot in a maze and it was inspired by a dream I had after watching Alice in Wonderland. I keep a small lined notepad besides my bed side table just incase these dreams occur.
What websites do you use to promote your brand and why?
I use a few things such as Behance, Flickr, Deviantart, and my blog which I love contributing too. I am at the beginning to use them less and less and trying to start to promote my website more.
In which online fashion communities are you involved and how this beneffits you?
Behance has attracted some attention to my blog but that is about all really. If you really want benefits you have to go out into the real world and make connections by meeting people face to face.
What kind of equipment do you use and what advantages it offers?
I shoot with my 5D mk ii a lot because for my type of work it has a faster turn around which is something I need for University and for client purposes.

What kind of software do you use to edit your photos and why?
I like to use Adobe products such as Photoshop and Lightroom to edit my images. They are the kings of the photo editing business.
What would be some tools that you would love to use but you’re currently not using?
Buy me a Phase One Back and a Hasselblad H3 anyday and I’ll love you forever. The quality images you can make on a phase one back are just incredible. All in all though, its not the equipment its what you do with it.
Is there anything else that you use to get your work done?
Passion.
