Diana Ionescu - Make-up Artist
Talk a little bit about yourself
I am Diana Ionescu, makeup artist for almost 3 years till now. Most of my work can be seen on my make-up and beauty blog where I post photos with and some make-up tutorials for passionates.
Also, I’m studying Architecture in Bucharest at Ion Mincu University. I’m in the 6th year ( the last ).
Why make-up?
Because I love to create, even it`s something that will be washed out the next day, or even it`s a drawing, a photo or architecture. I’ve realized that in the last period my passion for the human face has transformed from drawing and painting into conceptual makeup.
What are the most frequently used tools in your professional make up kit and why?
It depends on the type of make-up that I`m doing.
For conceptual make-up I like to play with the basics: white, black and nude - to create shapes and depths, to play with geometry and proportions. For this kind of make-up I use brushes, sponges ( from MAC, Kryolan, Sephora) or just my fingers.
For theatrical make-up I love to use the black/white paste from Kryolan.
For the foundation base I love the MAC cosmetics.
Otherwise I really like to experiment with all kind of products - from really cheap glitter, acrylic paints, to expensive High Definition products. It’s fascinating to discover their qualities and how to combine them.
Where do your inspiration comes from? Are you inspired by architecture?
Somehow yes, but I believe in all of art forms - especially visual art - (whether it’s architecture, makeup, drawing or photography ) who are connected together through a series of “rules” ( I use quotes because because I think that art is not defined by any rules, it is largely intuitive, and practically talent, just a small part is theory. )
Forms of expression that inspired me the most are makeup, photography and architecture they are correlated and almost always they are based on aesthetic principles and concepts. I can say that architecture helps me to understand better the make-up geometry, shadows or lights.
What are the magazines and 3 books that you read for inspiration?
Magazines:
Vogue
W Magazine
V Magazine
ELLE
I Love FAKE
Books:
Fashion now 1 & 2

Make-up your mind
Most of my time I use internet for inspiration and when I want to clear my mind I just take sky and nature as inspiration.
In which online fashion communities are you involved and how this helps you to promote your work?
I use Behance Network, Linkedin. I’ve realized that they are a good way to make contacts and promote my work and my website.

What are some online fashion stores and make up brands that you’re in love with and recommend to your clients?
Fashion stores
Molecule-f
Chouchou.ro
Urbanoutfitters
Custo-barcelona-store
Online make-upstores
Yaby Cosmetics
Kiko Cosmetics
Atelier Maquillage
Nyx Cosmetics
illamasqua
Makeup Forever
What are some products that you think any make up artist should have?
I don`t really think there are some products that work for every makeup artist, I think it`s a matter of choice - but what I’ve realized is that you can`t really stuck with just one brand and ignore the benefits and special products that other brands have.
Brands I use:
MAC Cosmetics because they have specific products for each kind of problem and because they are always in trend with eyeshadow kits or lipsticks.
Makeup Forever - because I can count on them for color intensity and durability.
Kryolan - because they are specialized for theater and movie make-up and have amazing high definition technologies. Also they have affordable prices for a professional brand.
KIKO - one of the best low cost professional cosmetics brands . I love the brushes, foundation creams, and brush cleanser
Too Faced - because their cosmetics looks so cute that I just want to play with them as I was doing when I was little :). and because they have very good quality pigments.
Sephora - I love the brushes and the diversity of their eyeshadow colors.
Nyx - for their pigments concentration. Their quality is similar to MAC Cosmetics but they don’t invest so much in promotion and I believe this is the reason that they are not so known as MAC.

What would be some tools that you would love to use but you’re currently not using?
The airbrush technique which is a small air-operated device that sprays various media including alcohol and water-based makeup.
Is there anything else that you use to get your work done?
Lot of passion and time :-)
