Catherine Parr - Fashion Illustrator

Talk a little bit about yourself

I am a painter/illustrator originally from the UK but presently living in Los Angeles, California.

What/who inspires your work?

My list is endless! Here are some that pop in my head right now: Mary Quant, Biba, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Tom WaitsRene Gruau, David Remfry, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Egon Schiele, Kenneth Paul Block, TwiggyKlimt, De Kooning, Katherine Hepburn, Jeff Buckly, Cy Twombly, John Henry Twachtman, Paul Newman, Leon Bakst, Mats Gustafson, R.M Schindler, Vivian Westwood, Radio Head, Beethoven, Cristobal Balenciaga, Yohji Yamamoto.

Also I feel really inspired by the 70s punk, nature and the ocean.

What kind of art supplies do you use?

Doc Martin’s watercolour and inks, BFK Rives watercolor/printing paper, Arches paper, Gamblin Oils, Winsor & Newton’s watercolours & gouaches and Koi water colors from Japan.

Do you use any software? For what kind of purposes?

I don’t use any software to edit my creations. All my artwork is traditional - no computer work, except for the scanning part.

I really like to think it gives others the opportunity to afford original art - rather than prints. My passion is painting in oils, something completely different!

What websites do you use to promote your artwork and why?

Etsy, Etsy, Etsy - It’s so wonderful to be a part of this community. Actually, I don’t really promote my etsy shop - people find me through this website, after I post some new work - I think they do all the promoting.

I have also a  wordpress blog and a website, which I use to post my favourite pieces - I don’t care for writing or blogging, yet! :)  Facebook and Flickr

Recommend 3 books that inspired you and helped you to developed your artwork?
  1. Drawing Fashion ~ The Art of Kenneth Paul Block
  2. Richard Diebenkorn ~ revised and expanded.
  3. In the Skin of the Lion ~ Michael Ondaatje.

What would be some tools that you would love to use but you’re currently not using?

I have experimented with most mediums and work now with my favourites - watercolour, ink and oil paint

Is there anything else that you use to get your work done?

A studio space with great music. :-)

What would be some tools that you think anyone should use it?

Graphite ~ drawing, lots of it! It’s the beginning and the foundation of everything.
